With students at age six or less, piano teaching becomes an adventure for both the child and the teacher. We've set aside our seriousness and inhibitions to join the child's world in a playful exploration of music and the keyboard. Through imagery, metaphor, and a diverse world of sound, we seek to develop a foundation of aural perception, eye tracking, and physical coordination. There is special opportunity to develop perceptual ability at a young age. Skills unfold while we engage the child's inherent love of music.
Ever wanted to pick up a new instrument but felt “too old” to learn something new? Are you curious about the lifelong benefits of playing music but don’t know where to start? Piano 101 is a course designed for non-music majors who have an interest in learning the foundations of music at the keyboard. In a matter of weeks, repertoire, technique, sight-reading, theory, and improvisational harmony would be taught in an open and understanding environment.
Infants need to hear and feel music early on if they are to begin to make sense of it. If, however, certain neurological pathways are not built early, they will become increasingly difficult to build later. The time to build and maintain those information highways is during the first months of life.
The First Steps in Music series is an attempt to preserve the rich repertoire of traditional and folk literature, and to enable today's families to recall and learn songs and rhymes that have nurtured wonder and joy in young people for generations. The authentic affection, innocence, and wonder of these songs and rhymes have the potential to plant the seeds of lifelong sensitivity and imagination.
